This was the first unit that we covered in class. During this unit we learned about the different parts of a computer and how they work. We also had to make an advertisement for a computer and include some of the parts we learned about.
Below are some of the terms we learned:
CPU/Processor-CPU or the Central Processing Unit, which is also known as the microprocessor, integrates the circuit controls of the computer or laptop. They come in various speeds, obviously the faster the better for multi-tasking or better gaming.
Motherboard-a printed circuit board containing the principal components of a computer or other device, with connectors into which other circuit boards can be slotted.
Bit-a small piece, part, or quantity of something
Byte-a group of binary digits or bits (usually eight) operated on as a unit
Prefixes- Kilo- 1,000
Mega- 100,000
Giga- 100,000,000
Tera- 1,000,000,000,000
Hertz-the SI unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second.
Hard Drive-a high-capacity, self-contained storage device containing a read-write mechanism plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit. Also called hard disk drive.
RAM- is an acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers.
Jump/Thumb/Flash Drive- a small electronic device containing flash memory that is used for storing data or transferring it to or from a computer, digital camera, etc.
CDRW-a blank compact disc that can be recorded, erased, and rerecorded many times
DVD RW-a blank DVD that can be recorded, erased, and rerecorded with data many times and read using the DVD+RW format.
USB- Stands for Universal Serial Bus
Fire Wire/Thunderbolt-Thunderbolt is a hardware interface that allows for the connection of external peripherals to a computer.
Operating System-the software that supports a computer’s basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.
PCI-a standard for connecting computers and their peripherals]
AGP-The Accelerated Graphics Port is a high-speed point-to-point channel for attaching a video card to a computer’s motherboard, primarily to assist in the acceleration of 3D computer graphics. Originally it was designed as a successor to PCI type connections
FSB-Federal Security Bureau: the internal counterintelligence agency of the Russian Federation and successor to the Soviet KGB; formerly led by Vladimir Putin
Modem- a combined device for modulation and demodulation, for example, between the digital data of a computer and the analog signal of a telephone line.
RGB- The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors. The name of the model comes from the initials of the three additive primary colors, red, green, and blue
CMYK- is a color model in which all colors are described as a mixture of these four process colors. CMYK is the standard color model used in offset printing for full-color documents. Because such printing uses inks of these four basic colors, it is often called four-color printing.
